Report: Dodgers place pitcher Schmidt on DL

According to a broadcast report on ESPN News, the Los Angeles Dodgers have placed starting pitcher Jason Schmidt on the 15-day disabled list. The pitcher underwent on MRI on Monday after the pitcher failed to break 90 MPH on the radar gun in a game against the San Diego Padres.

The Dodgers signed Schmidt to a three-year, $47 million deal this past offseason.

Arkansas’ Nutt puts out letter refuting Web rumors (ESPN.com News Services)

Houston Nutt, head football coach of the Arkansas Razborback, fired back at Internet rumor mongers (we guess we’re including in that) for mischaracterizing his relationship with a news anchor, the continuing criticism of how he handled departing quarterback Mitch Mustain and other personal attacks related to a release of cell phone records under the Freedom of Information of Act earlier this month.

Red Bulls land Angel from Villa

Red Bulls acquire forward Juan Pablo Angel from EPL’s Villa (AP/SI.com)

The MLS NewYork Red Bulls have acquired the rights to forward Juan Pablo Angel from the European Premier League’s Aston Villa on Tuesday.  This is the Red Bulls second acquisition under the league’s ‘player designation’ rule, which allows MLS teams to add players outside the salary cap.

The Red Bulls’ first move was landing U.S. soccer great Claudio Reyna earlier this year.

Cubs place Soriano on DL, call up Pie (STL Today)

The Chicago Cubs have placed outfielder Alfonso Soriano on the disabled list and have called up outfield prospect Felix Pie (pronounced pee-YAY).  Soriano suffered a hamstring injury charging a fly ball in a game against the San Diego Padres on Monday night.

***UPDATED at 4:54 PM EDT***
Bad information correction — The Associated Press is reporting that Soriano will only be out a week and was not placed on the disabled list.  They did, however, call up prospect Felix Pie and sent down starter Angel Guzman.

NBA suspends referee Crawford indefinitely (ESPN News Services)

The NBA has suspended referee Joe Crawford indefinitely after he ejected San Antonio Spurs center Tim Duncan on Sunday and allegedly challenged him to a fight. 

Quoth David Stern, czar of the NBA –

“Joey Crawford’s handling of this situation failed to meet the standards of professionalism and game management we expect of NBA referees. Especially in light of similar prior acts by this official, a significant suspension is warranted. Although Joey is consistently rated as one of our top referees, he must be held accountable for his actions on the floor, and we will have further discussions with him following the season to be sure he understands his responsibilities.”

Hurricanes extend Rutherford five years

Hurricanes sign GM Rutherford for five more years (AP/ESPN)

The Carolina Hurricanes have extended the contract of general manager Jim Rutherford for five more years, the Associated Press is reporting.  In his 13 seasons on the job, he’s navigated the franchise through its tumultuous move to the Carolinas from Hartford, Conn. and he also led the Hurricanes to two appearances in the Stanley Cup finals, winning the franchise’s first Cup in 2006. The team has won the Southeast Division in three of the last seven seasons.

Lawyer for Chatman claims job was taken from her

Lawyer claims Chatman did not freely give up LSU job (AP/USA Today)

The lawyer for deposed LSU women’s basketball coach Pokey Chatman claims the she didn’t freely give up her job as originally reported, the Associated Press is reporting.

Mary Olive Pierson, Chatman’s attorney, states that her client neither “fairly obtained or freely given” her resignation.
