The morning after strikeouts stand out on box scores around the majors…
The surging Yankees improved to 27-11 since the All-Star break; the Padres pulled a game ahead of the Phillies in the top wild-card spot; Milwaukee’s Chris Capuano lost his 16th straight start, becoming the first player to do so since Boston’s Jim Lonborg in 1969 and the Boston Red Sox’s lead dropped to just four games in the AL East.
Tigers 3, Yankees 9 — Wilson Betemit, who started for the resting Derek Jeter at shortstop, drove in four runs
and broke the game open with a bases-loaded double in the eighth as the Yankees clubbed the Tigers 9-3.
Indians 3, D’Rays 4 (12 innings) — Joel Guzman, called up just before the game when Ben Zobrist was DL’d, hit a game-winning RBI single in his first at-bat with Tampa Bay, sending the Devil Rays past Cleveland 4-3 in 12 innings.
O’s 2, BlueJays 3 (10 innings) — Roy Halladay of Toronto struck out five and walked three over 125 pitches en route to a no-decision as the BlueJays won on a sac fly by Aaron Hill in the bottom of the tenth to give the Jays the series win over Baltimore.
Angels 3, Red Sox 1 — Joe Saunders allowed six hits and just two runners to reach second base in 7 2/3 innings of work in the Angels’ 3-1 win over the lagging Red Sox.
Royals 1, A’s 6 — Oakland shortstop Marco Scutaro went 4-for-4 with a solo homer as the A’s eased by the visiting Royals.
Rangers 0, Twins 1 — Johan Santana. 17 strikeouts. You do the math.
White Sox 5, Mariners 11 — Seattle’s Jose Guillen homered and drove in five runs as the Mariners crushed the White Sox 11-5.
