The Detroit Tigers dropped a season-high 5 1/2 games back in the AL Central after a tough defeat in Oakland; Arizona coughed up a three-run lead and, not only lost an extra-inning game to Colorado, but lost sole possession of first in the NL West; the Angels continue to roll, making it only the second time in their 47-year history that they have been alone in first place at the end of every month from April through August and Cardinals outfielder Juan Encarnacion was rushed to a local St. Louis hospital after being struck by an errant foul ball off the bat of Aaron Miles while waiting on the on deck circle.
Royals 9, Twins 4 (Game 1) — In game one of their twinight doubleheader, KC’s Ross Gload homered and drove in three runs as the Royals down the Twins 9-4.
Royals 0, Twins 5 (Game 2) — Minnesota’s Scott Baker had a dream night
on the bump: he struck out nine, flirted with a perfect game through eight innings and lost a no-hitter two batters later on a pinch hit single by Mark Sweeney. Baker ended up with a complete game, one hit shutout over the Royals, 5-0.
White Sox 5, Indians 8 — Cleveland scored two runs in the sixth and six more in the eighth to earn its seventh straight victory after being down five runs to the visiting White Sox and strolled to an 8-5 victory.
O’s 9, Red Sox 8 — Powered by Nick Markakis’ three hits — including a three-run bomb in the sixth inning — and a strong relief appearance by Kurt Birkins, the Baltimore Orioles hung on to win a wild one over the Red Sox as Fenway, 9-8.
D’Rays 9, Yankees 1 — Tampa’s Andy Sonnanstine pitched eight strong innings of two-hit ball and Carlos Pena homered twice, leading Tampa Bay to a 9-1 rout of the lethargic Yankees.
M’s 5, BlueJays 7 — The slumping Mariners lost their seventh straight game as Troy Glaus hit a two-run homer and Lyle Overbay and Alex Rios also went deep in the Toronto Blue Jays’ 7-5.
Tigers 4, A’s 5 (10 innings) — Oakland’s Dan Johnson lined the game-winning single to right with none out in the 10th inning, lifting the Oakland Athletics to a 5-4 victory over the Detroit Tigers.
Rangers 6, Angels 7 — Garret Anderson hit a two-run homer and scored the winning run on a 10th-inning infield single by Howie Kendrick, giving the Angels their fifth straight win, 7-6.
