Red Sox set rotation (AP/SI.com)
The Boston Red Sox have set their post-season rotation for the American League Division Series against the Los Angeles Angles of Anaheim and it’s quite the troika.
Josh Beckett is set for Game 1 and will be followed by Daisuke Matsuzaka and Curt Schilling, respectively.
“We’re trying to gear up for 2 1/2 or 3 weeks of starts,” manager Terry Francona said Monday. “I really don’t have any qualms about it or I wouldn’t have done it.”
The rotation leaves out knuckleballer Tim Wakefield, who struggled towards the end of the 2007 season.

Mutombo, 41, returns to Rockets for 16th season (AP/ESPN)
The Houston Rockets inked aging center Dikembe Mutombo to a one-year contract, giving the player a chance to continue his career for a 16th season.
This upcoming season will be his last.
“I’m going to enjoy every second and every minute of my last year in the NBA,” he said. “I hope my farewell tour will be a nice memorable one.”
The 7-foot-2 center reconsidered his retirement after a dinner with friend and former Rockets star Hakeem Olajuwon.
“Talking to [Olajuwon] at dinner, it kind of lifted me up a little bit, because I was down. He said, ‘Don’t walk away from the game because you got hurt from the loss. You can stay around, even play one more year. Maybe next year can be a better one.’ Something very positive came from him.”

Univ. of Memphis football player murdered (AP/USA Today)
A University of Memphis football player was fatally shot on campus in what was believed to be a targeted attack, and classes were canceled Monday as a precaution, officials said.
According to officials, Taylor Bradford, 21, was shot near a university housing complex about 9:45 p.m. Sunday and then got into a car, driving a short distance before it crashed into a tree.
Memphis head football coach Tommy West express his sorrow in a prepared statement:
“Our entire football team is deeply saddened by the loss of Taylor. He was well respected and a popular member of our team. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.”
As a result of the shooting death, the university cancelled classes on Monday.

TBS re-shuffles broadcast teams after Mets disappear (USA Today)
One of our favorite media writers, Michael Hiestand of USA Today, informs us via his Sports Television column that TBS will make some changes to its broadcasting teams in the wake of the New York Metropolitans missing out on the post-season.
Ron Darling, a Mets analyst, is now free to join the TBS rotation and will team with the ageless one Dick Stockton, moving Bob Brenly to the Chip Caray-Tony Gwynn duo.
TBS will offer various new looks, such as the first live online views from cameras in dugouts and ones focused on pitchers. TBS also will do something that might allow studio analyst Cal Ripken Jr. to add to his career stats. The graphic that creates a sort of rainbow to trace the arc of pitches on game replays will be superimposed in the studio so Ripken can take virtual cuts at pitches thrown in games.
In other media notes: Jerome Bettis recalled his trade from St. Louis to Pittsburgh and wasn’t very pleased (he tossed out an expletive); Kelly Pavlik, who captured the middle weight championship Saturday, did the same thing to a question asked by HBO boxing analyst Larry Merchant; and CBS’ Charley Casserly informed viewers that the NFL is eyeing changes with its radio receivers in players’ helmets to help speed up games.

The morning after Brett Favre passed Dan Marino on the all-time TD list...
Ravens 13, Browns 27 — The ‘new’ Cleveland Browns took out the ‘old’ Cleveland Browns (Baltimore Ravens) 27-13. Quarterback Derek Anderson, who suppanted Charlie Frye at the outset of the season, threw two touchdown passes, Jamal Lewis ran for one against his former team and the Browns, considered the weaklings of the rugged AFC North, surprised the Baltimore Ravens.
Raiders 35, Dolphins 17 — The game can be best describe as the best revenge is kicking your former team’s collective ass: Daunte Culpepper ran for three touchdowns and threw for two to win a grudge game against his former team, helping the Oakland Raiders beat the winless Miami Dolphins 35-17.
Broncos 20, Colts 38 — Denver didn’t feel all that welcomed at Peyton’s Place as Manning led the Colts to six scores on his final eight possessions, rallying Indianapolis from an early 10-point deficit to an impressive 38-20 victory.
Chiefs 30, Chargers 16 — The Kansas City Chiefs rallied with 24 unanswered points amid San Diego fans cheering — and longing — for the return of Mary Schottenheimer, who was canned in February due to his faltering relationship with the club’s front office. Chiefs wide receiver, their first round pick in this year’s draft, tallied a whopping 164 yards receiving — including ripping one off for 51 — as they clubbed the Chargers 30-16.

The morning after the Mets choked away a division title and the Padres lost their way to a one-game playoff…
Yankees 10, O’s 4 — The Yankees downed the lowly Orioles with a line-up that largely featured reserves after the fourth inning, 10-4. Alex Rodriguez drove in his career-record 156th RBI and Bobby Abreu knocked in his 100th RBI to extend his personal streak of five consecutive seasons with a century or more RBIs.
Twins 3, Red Sox 2 — In perhaps his last game as a Minnesota Twin, Torii Hunter drove in the game’s first two runs as the Twins eventually downed the Red Sox 3-2, who played mainly substitutes after clinching the American League East on Friday.
Angels 2, A’s 3 — Kurt Suzuki drove in the game-winning run in the last of the ninth to eke out a 3-2 win over the American League West champion Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (near San Diego along Interstate 5 in Orange County), 3-2.
indians 4, Royals 2 — Travis Hafner drove in two runs to reach 100 RBIs for the fourth straight year and the Cleveland Indians beat the Kansas City Royals 4-2.
