The Philadelphia Fightin’ Phillies have given manager Charlie Manuel a two-year contract extension, with a club option for 2010.

A fourth man has been charged with murder in the shooting of a football player on the University of Memphis campus during a botched robbery, authorities told the Associated Press.
A 21-year old student at the school named Devin Jefferson has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder.
The Kansas State football program has reported violations in its football program and is cooperating with the NCAA in an investigation.
Athletic director Tim Weiser said that the Big 12 has reported the violations to the NCAA’s governing body.
“We have never, nor will we ever, tolerate intentional violations of NCAA rules,” Weiser said. “Should it be determined that violations have occurred, we will take whatever steps necessary to ensure that we maintain the highest standard for compliance.”
The investigation centers around a former university employee, three former players and two current team members.

Indians 6, Yankees 4 — The game started out ominously as Cleveland lead-off hitter Grady Sizemore clubbed the third pitch from Yankees starter Chien-Ming Wang and the Indians put the peddle-to-the-metal and knocked off the Bronx Bombers 6-4 to claim the American League Division Series.
Wang’s outing didn’t get better from there as he was chased in the second after giving up three more runs.
Paul Byrd and the Indians bullpen closed out the Yanks over four innings pitched, completing another first-round debacle for the Yankees that might cost manager Joe Torre his job.
