Tom Osborne to be Nebraska AD?

According to a broadcast report on ESPN News, former Nebraska head football coach and Congressman Tom Osborne will take over the reigns of the school’s athletic department to clean things up.

The San Diego Chargers, looking for more offensive firepower, acquired wide receiver Chris Chambers from the Miami Dolphins, sources told ESPN.com’s John Clayton.

Callahan says no one asking him to quit

Callahan: No one asking him to quit (AP/ESPNU)

Despite the fact that the athletic director that hired him was fired on Monday, Nebraska coach Bill Callahan stated in his weekly press conference that he hasn’t been asked to resign nor will he quit his position.

Nebraska is having a tough go of it in ‘07. After back-to-back blowout losses to Missouri and Oklahoma State, the program has a 4-3 record.

The underrated National Lacrosse League canceled its upcoming 2008 season due to the lack of a collective bargaining agreement.

According to a short excerpt provided by the Canadian Press, the NLLPA might need a change of leadership.

Friend: Mattingly says it’s not time (NJ.com)

As Joe Torre’s future as Yankees manager hangs in the balance, his bench coach reportedly has told the Bronx Bombers that he’s not ready to replace Torre in the hot seat.

A friend of Don Mattingly told the Star-Ledger of Newark, N.J., that the Yankees bench coach has informed the Yankees that he’s not ready to manage and is uncomfortable with replacing Torre as manager.

The morning after the NFL chose a stinker of a match-up to compete against MLB…

Giants 31, Falcons 10

With apologies to some who may be reading that are fans of both clubs, this match-up sucked.  Due to that, there’s really not much to mention other than to state that the Giants whomped up on the woeful Falcons, 31-10.

If you’re interested in arguably the most entertaining part of the game, there’s video of Jimmy Kimmel’s third quarter appearance in the MNF booth taking shots at former analyst Joe Theismann and others.  If not, we can’t blame ya.

The morning after the Colorado Rockies become the third expansion team from the 1990s to enter baseball’s biggest stage: the World Series…

D’Backs 4, Rockies 6

We don’t really get tired of typing this: the Colorado Rockies won their 21st contest out of their last 22 games, sweeping the Arizona Diamondbacks on their way to the World Series and the NL pennant,  6-4.

The Rockies are the first team since the 1935 Chicago Cubs to win at least 21 of 22 after Sept. 1, according to Elias Sports Bureau.

Daisuke Matsuzaka failed to make it beyond the fifth inning for his second consecutive start, giving up four earned runs — including a second inning two-run home run by wily veteran Kenny Lofton — and putting his team in a hole they couldn’t climb out of late, as the Cleveland Indians took Game 3 at Jacobs Field, 2-1.

Report: Angels’ Stoneman to leave GM position (AP/ESPN.com) After eight years of piloting the Los Angeles Angels as GM — and not pulling the trigger on a key trade seemingly every deal at the deadline for a bat they desperately needed — Bill Stoneman is abandoning the GM’s chair. Tony Reagins, the Angels’ director of player development, is expected to become the new GM.

A-Rod, Boras rendezvous in California (AP/SI.com) The pair will be talking contract options — literally — over the next week.

Priest yet to have last rites; Chiefs deal Bennett

Holmes eligible to practice with Chiefs this week; Bennett dealt to Bucs (KC Star)

With a glut of running backs on the horizon, the Kansas City Chiefs traded Michael Bennett to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.  The club has yet to confirm the move, but Bennett told The Kansas City Star that he to pack his bags.

“It was a shock to me,” Bennett said. “It really caught me off-guard. I heard the speculation for the past few days, but nobody from the Chiefs said anything to me, so I guessed it wasn’t going to happen. I was wrong. It’s a business. It’s just one of those things that happen.”
