‘The General’ talks baseball (ESPN)

It was Big XII hoops media day in Kansas City, Missouri and Bob Knight was the star attraction.

We guess the media was running out of things to ask him, so they probed his mind on baseball. 

Some sample questions: Would the Indians beat the Rockies? and Would St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa want to manage the Royals?

Joe Torre decision update: nothing to report

According to a broadcast report on ESPN News, the meeting of the New York Yankees brass has broken up with no decision yet on the future of manager Joe Torre.

The Associated Press is reporting that the Yankees brass is going through painstaking details to make sure the decision is correct.

Penn State’s Scott pleads not guilty

PSU’s Scott pleads not guilty to rape charges (AP/ESPNU)

Penn State tailback Austin Scott pleaded not guilty to rape charges and was ordered to stand trial on felony rape and sexual-assault charges, the Associated Press is reporting.

Scott was suspended from the team on Oct. 5, and charged last week. Defense lawyer John Karoly said Scott will remain in school while he fights the charges.

Thrashers fire head coach Hartley (TSN.ca)

TSN Canada’s Bob McKenzie reports that the Atlanta Thrashers have fired head coach Bob Hartley after his club got off to the worst start in franchise history (0-6-0).

General manager Don Waddell will take the reins on an interim basis.

The Yankees braintrust are still meeting in Florida (who knew?) and manager Joe Torre still hasn’t learned his fate.

With all the hubbub surrounding the machinations behind such a move, someone else is going to get a pink slip: Ron Guidry.

Packers’ WR Koren Robinson reinstated

Report: NFL reinstates Koren Robinson (ESPN.com)

Chris Mortensen of ESPN.com is reporting that the National Football League has reinstated Green Bay wide receiver Koren Robinson.

Robinson was suspended for one year for violating the league’s substance abuse policy after an August 2006 drunk driving incident while the receiver was with the Minnesota Vikings.

Report: AD says no deal on successor for Boeheim (ESPN News Services)

In a story we blogged in “HTS,” the Syrcause hoops job would have a pre-determined successor in Mike Hopkins, the 13-year assistant to the legendary Jim Boeheim, locked up to a multi-year deal, The Associated Press reported.

Now comes word that the athletic director, Daryl Glass, shot down the report stating that the comments were taken out of context in an interview with the school’s student paper, The Daily Orange.

The New York Post’s Joel Sherman reports that Alex Rodriguez and his agent, Scott Boras, have wrapped up a three-day meeting, with Boras believing his client has the information he needs to decide whether to stay with the New York Yankees or opt out of his contract.

Atlanta considering quarterback change after 1-5 start (ESPN.com)

After struggling behind Joey Harrington and a 1-5 start,  ESPN.com’s Len Pasquarelli reporta that Atlanta Falcons head coach Bobby Petrino might be pondering a starting quarterback change. Looking for a spark, a move to recently signed Byron Leftwich for the team’s game against New Orleans Sunday might in order.

After 17 days between starts, Boston’s Tim Wakefield sure was ready to come in and pitch a key Game 4 for the Red Sox, who were down 2 to 1 to the Cleveland Indians entering the contest.

And he pitched well through four innings, giving up just one hit to Cleveland hitters.

That fifth inning just wasn’t so kind.
