Ryan out as U.S. Women’s coach (AP/ESPN)

Greg Ryan is out as the U.S. women’s soccer coach less than a month after his top-ranked team lost in the World Cup semifinals following a contentious goalie switch.

U.S. Soccer president Sunil Gulati said that Ryan will not return as coach on a conference call Monday.

TLR:  He thinks that John Mozeliak will be a good fit should he be selected at the team’s GM.  “If spring training started tomorrow, I’d be excited.”

TLR: The moves for the organization all depends on the general manager’s philosophy.  He hopes that those in uniform will have input once that person is installed.  “I expect that they won’t surprise the guy’s in uniform”

TLR: He asked the more experienced players on the ballclub how they felt about him sticking around before the season ended.  Third baseman Scott Rolen is “probably the one guy that has issues with me.”  He hopes he’s in a Cardinals uniform next year.

If you were sitting at home watching Game 7 of the ALCS Sunday, you noticed that Kevin Millar threw out the first pitch of Sunday’s game.

Let’s type that again, this time a bit differently: an active member of the Baltimore Orioles threw out a first pitch for division rival Boston…a key playoff game.

Report: Tony La Russa to return to manage the Cardinals

Reports: Tony La Russa to return to helm the Cards (AP/STLToday)

According to media reports — via Internet message boards and The Associated Press — Tony La Russa, who led the St. Louis Cardinals to their 10th World Series championship in 206, will return for his 13th season in the Gateway City.

St. Louis Post-Dispatch columnist Bernie Miklasz broke the story via his online forum.

Jets 31, Bengals 38 — Cincinnati Bengals running back Kenny Watson had a career day on the ground, rushing for 130 yards and three touchdowns to help lead “The Cincy 53″ to a 38-31 victory over the hapless Jets.

Pats 49, Phins 28 –  A new week, same results: Tom Brady threw a team-record six touchdownThe Brady-Moss connection rolls on (AP/Townson) passes to help the unbeaten Patriots rout the winless Miami Dolphins 49-28.  Brady also compiled 354-yards passing and wide receivers Wesley Welker and Randy Moss each tabulated over 100 yards receiving (138 yards for the former; 122 for the latter) and had two touchdowns.

Titans 38, Texans 36 — The Houston Texans put up 29 points in the fourth quarter, capped off by a 53-yard bomb from Sage Rosenfels to Andre Davis to briefly take the lead with less than a minute to play.  The Titans were saved by their kicker, Rod Bironas, who booted a 29-yard field goal as the digits went double zero to give the Titans 38-36 win in Houston.  The kick was his eighth field goal of the day, setting a new NFL record.

Steelers 28, Broncos 31 — Jason Elam, who has the game-winner in all three of the Broncos’ wins so far, nailed his 49-yard kick as time expired to cap a seven-play, 49-yard drive that covered the final 1:10 after Pittsburgh had rallied from a 14-point second-half deficit to tie it.

The morning after Dustin Pedroia dusts off his ‘Superman’s’ cape…

Indians 2, Red Sox 11

Dustin Pedroia is the toast of New England this Monday.

Pedroia’s two-run, towering blast in the seventh inning helped put some breathing room in a then-tight game.  He followed that up with a three-run, bases clearing double in the eighth to help blow the game wide open as the Red Sox cruised to a 11-2 victory to capture the seven game set after being down 3 games to 1.

MLB denies knowledge of Byrd’s HGH use (USA Today) Bob Nightengale writes Major League Baseball officials denied Cleveland Indians pitcher Paul Byrd’s contention that it was aware of his use of human-growth hormone, and plan to meet with him before the start of the World Series.

Charlotte’s Morrison likely done for season (AP/ESPN) Charlotte Bobcats reserve forward Adam Morrison is likely done for the season after an MRI exam on Sunday revealed a torn ligament in his left knee.
