Selig gets three-year extension through 2012 (AP/SI.com)

Bud Selig, whose tenure as MLB commissioner has seen the biggest financial boon in the game’s history (and arguably it’s biggest scandal — steroids), had his contract extended by baseball’s owners for three more years.

The unanimous vote came at the owner’s meetings in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Selig has been commissioner since 1992, when he succeeded a resigning Fay Vincent.

Heyman: Clemens might be in some hot water with Congress

17 01 2008

Clemens could be in trouble against Congress (SI.com)

When Roger Clemens steps up to the mics and addresses Congress next month, he could be in for a rough time of it, writes SI.com’s Jon Heyman.

If Clemens really does go to Washington next month and tell his seemingly fanciful story — one a child would have trouble believing — that McNamee never injected him with steroids 16 times between 1998 and 2001, it won’t be as the pampered star he’s been his whole adult life. Rather, he will go as toast.

If Clemens dares to show up next month, he will be facing folks that aren’t fans or friends but who are out for blood. For all the obvious lack of baseball knowledge displayed yesterday by many committee members — several mispronounced Bud Selig’s name, one referred to Rafael Palmeiro as “Palmieri,” and yet another called the postseason the “post-session” — they’ve already spilled several pints of big-name blood back in 2005.

As Terrell Owens might say — “Get yo popcorn ready!”

Ten things you should know about cold-weather football

17 01 2008

Freeze Frames: 10 things you should know about cold-weather football (ESPN.com)

With apparently nothing much else to write about leading up to another playoff game in “The Frozen Tundra” — you can almost hear Chris Berman gurgling it out — ESPN.com breaks down all the things we should know about games in cold-weather.

Here are some things we just have to know:

  1. Should a quarterback wear a glove during cold weather?
  2. Hey, Len Pasquarelli, will the Super Bowl ever be played outdoors in a cold-weather city?
  3. Why do lineman insist on wearing short-sleeve jerseys when it’s 20 degrees?
  4. Do heaters really help on the bench?

Riveting. Simply, riveting.

Leyritz toxicology tests are in and he flunked with flying colors

17 01 2008

Ex-Yankee Leyritz will face additional manslaughter charge (AP/ESPN.com)

Toxicology results show former major leaguer Jim Leyritz’s blood-alcohol levels were nearly twice the legal limit the day he was involved in a fatal crash in December, the Associated Press reported.

Tests taken at two different times in the morning hours of Dec. 28 showed a 0.14 and a 0.13 blood-alcohol level for the former Yankee, whose claim to his 15 minutes of fame launching a game-tying home run in the 1996 World Series against Atlanta.

With these numbers that were nearly twice the legal limit, the Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) Police Department plan on adding an additional manslaughter charge to his already cited DUI manslaughter and DUI property damage charges after the accident killed Fredia Ann Veitch.

Dad jailed for…taping jersey on son

17 01 2008

Father jailed for taping Packers jersey on seven-year old son (AP/SI.com)

A father in Portage, Wisconsin allegedly restrained his seven-year old son and taped a Green Bay Packers jersey on him after he refused wearing it while watching the Seahawks-Packers game Saturday.

The father, named Matthew Kowald, was cited disorderly conduct after his arrest, according to the Columbia County Sheriff’s Department, thanks in large part to the boy’s mother taking pictures with her cell phone as evidence.

Kowald paid a $186 fine and was released after pleading no contest.

One of the leaders for the “2008 Father of the Year Award” right there.
